SMARTCOM FAX: AN OVERVIEW
--------------------------
With the Smartcom FAX software and your Hayes fax modem, you can use your Macintosh to send, receive, view, save, print, and delete fax documents. The Smartcom FAX software includes the following five parts:
'FaxMenu' -- control panel
'FaxMonitor' -- system init
'FaxPrint' -- chooser extension
'Fax Status' -- desk accessory
'Smartcom FAX' -- application
'FaxMenu'
The 'FaxMenu' control panel allows you to define activation keys to fax documents without changing your default printer with the chooser.
'FaxMonitor'
Is a system INIT that runs at system boot time. It installs the fax driver into the system folder. It will also initializes your fax modem at system boot time.
'FaxPrint'
The software is activated and configured with the FaxPrint chooser extension. When you select the 'FaxPrint' icon in the Chooser, your fax modem will become your default printer for all Macintosh applications. The software will automatically change the word 'Print' to the word 'Fax' in all File menus.
'FaxStatus'
The 'Fax Status' DA allows you to monitor the progress of a fax transmission or reception.
'Smartcom FAX'
The 'Smartcom FAX' application is used to view, print, save, and delete fax documents. The Smartcom FAX application is also used to edit phone books and create customized cover pages.
INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE
------------------------
Before installing the Smartcom FAX software, you must connect your Hayes fax modem to your computer and turn it on. Otherwise, the software will not be able to complete the installation process.
To install the software, quit any applications that may be running and insert disk #1 into your floppy disk drive. Then, double click on the 'Installer' application located on disk #1. The installer will ask you what type of fax modem you have. Select your modem and click on the select button. A dialog box will ask you to select either 'easy install' or 'custom install.' We recommend you use the 'easy install' option unless you are familiar with this product and want to limit the features that are installed on your computer.
SENDING A FAX
-------------
You can send a fax by selecting 'Fax' from the File menu of any application. When the Smartcom FAX software is selected in the Chooser, 'Print' is replaced by 'Fax' in all File menus. If you have your regular printer selected in the chooser, you can hold down your activator keys while selecting the File menu to select your fax modem as the default printer. When this occurs you'll notice that the word 'Print' is replaced with 'Fax' in all File menus.
RECEIVING A FAX
---------------
The software will automatically be enabled to receive a fax when the software is installed. To receive a fax, the fax modem and the computer must be turned on and the fax receive option must be enabled. This option may be turned off by changing the modem settings to never answer an incoming call. The modem settings are accessed through the 'FaxPrint' chooser extension.
TIPS
----
• Make sure your modem is turned on when your computer is starting up. The software will try to initialize your fax modem at system boot time. If it cannot communicate with the modem the software will turn itself off and you will have to use the 'FaxPrint' chooser extension to turn it back on.
• If you need to scan an image for use on your computer, you can send yourself a fax of the image from any fax machine and then save the received fax document in a format that is compatible with your graphics applications. You can choose from the PICT, TIFF, and Paint file formats.
• If you are having problems sending or receiving a fax, try lowering the transmission speed settings in the 'fax modem' dialog box that is accessed from the FaxPrint chooser extension. This problem may occur if you are attempting to send a document at 14400 bps from a 68000 based computer such as a Macintosh Plus.
• If you would like to only save part of a received fax document for use in a graphics application, you can select a part of the image you are viewing in the Smartcom FAX application and copy it into the scrapbook or clipboard.
• You may double click on items in some lists to select or open them.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
-----------------------
Some programs may not allow you to directly send a fax from them when you access their normal printing functions. This is because they normally do not present the standard print job dialog when they handle a print request. If you encounter one of these programs, take the following steps to send a fax from them:
• Try to send a fax from within the program by selecting its print function. This should create a fax image document.
• Startup the Smartcom FAX application and find the newly created fax image in the 'Fax Schedule' document list.
• Select the document and a destination, and then click on the 'Telephone' icon to send it.
